The kick-off of the Concept One Race of Champions & Philippine Touring Car Championships (PTCC) commenced last October 2, 2010 and now after three years, it is back to its original racing heritage at the Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC). Last year the touring race was held at Subic Raceway, a prestigious venue for both local and international races. I have never witnessed a race at BRC, it was only through Slipstream that i’ve watched it on TV.
Since I havent seen a live touring race, i was indeed excited to witness one especially the support race dubbed as “The Race of Champions (ROC)” series spearheaded by Sam Liuson from Concept One and Nitto Tires. Philippine Race Champions from different disciplines such as karting, rally, touring, auto-cross and drifting gathered together to battle against each other to win the title.
Filipino racing icons such as Alex Perez, Doby Atilano, Ferdie Ong, Edgen Dy-Liacco, Ivan Isada , Mike Potenciano, Louie Ramirez, George Ramirez, Jojo Silverio, Pepon Marave, Paeng Nodalo, Ferdie Ong, , George Ramirez, Mandy Eduque , Popong Andolong, and special guest Ryan Agoncillo pitted against one another driving sponsored vehicles.
This event will not be made possible without the support of manufacturers namely by Chevrolet Cruze, MotorImage Pilipinas Subaru and Mini Copper for quickly jumping to support this great idea. Different car manufacturer vehicles will be used in the race of champion series Legs.
The (PTCC) touring race format changed from the past years, wherein in one weekend they had four round of races as compared to two rounds for this weekend. In real scenario, for instance you had a bad race day or you ruined your car early meaning you will have a hard chance in winning the overall championship.
There are two classes of touring cars running, one is the Production Class (PPCC) (a car locally produced with a few tweaks and restrictions) and one is the Group 3 (PTCC) (wherein any tweaks goes as long as it met its required safety).
We were lucky to catch the first race, it was nice to see the new comer, the Chevrolet Cruze that performed its wheels advanced designs and exceptional build quality – tuned by BRE which is part of the Production Class. Specially seeing it perform in the same class against the Ford Focus and the Honda Civics. It was nice to see more race cars run this year since the other car units elevated in a different category
After the production race, it was followed by Group 3 Cars. This race had a lot of action, tons of battle for positions and lead changes. After the touring cars it was followed by the race of champions, and the Media edition. With participants from automotive broadcast, print, web motoring journalists to get some action. It was nice to see all motor heads get to gather. Specially with the Champions of past and present racers.
For this round the race of champions and media participants drove a Chevrolet Cruze with bodykits by A-toy, tuned by Blance Race engineering, and fitted by Conceptone rims with Nitto tires.
The time sheet showed what these guys are really capable of, a difference of a second from 1st to 3rd. George Ramirez took top spot with a time of 2’13’34, follow by Mike Potenciano 1’34”87, and Pepon Marave 2’14”56 taking 3rd .
For the Media edition it was Brian Afuang of Manila times bagged first place , followed by Stephen Yu of Top Gear, and Tet Andolong of Business Mirror. If you want to see more of this kind of action once again 3 legs will be this weekend January 8-9, 2011 at the Clark International speedway. Invited racing champions are Popong Andolong, Mike Anton, Edgen Dyliacco, Mandy Eduque, Vip and Ivan Isada, Pepon Marave, Gaby dela Merced, Ferdie Ong, Alex Perez, Mike Potenciano, G…eorges, Louie and Miguel Ramirirez, Dante & Jojo Silverio, Tyson Sy.
